It seems like I need an appointment secretary. It hasn't always been that way. My memory was such that I always remembered birthdays, anniversaries, appointments and payments (ugh!). Now I need constant reminders. I have tried carrying pocket planners. They only work when the information is written legibly and then only if one remembers to periodically check them. For some time I carried a PDA (personal digital assistant), which I used primarily to keep track of appointments. I could also play games; store contact information; make notes; create spread sheets and text documents and synchronize the entire thing to my computer. I could even use it as an alarm clock. Well, the PDA died and from what I can determine, there's no replacement unless one wishes to purchase a smartphone. Well, I really don't want to own a phone with more bells & whistles than I already have. My current phone has a calendar feature... it's just not very handy. In fact it is quite cumbersome. The benefit though is that it will sound an alarm, provided that the alarm has been set... even better if the alarm provides enough prior notice.
Since I am no longer as important as I once was... meaning that I only wear a coat and tie once or twice a year again... I will attempt to remember to input engagements on my current cellphone and then remember to turn it on and keep it charged.
I am now trying to remember why I even started this post.
Oh, yeah...
Every year Lions Clubs all start thinking about their next year. They elect new officers and give awards to members for service. Many of the clubs make it a really special occasion by asking district officers and past district officers to officiate at these ceremonies. The big drawback is that most these clubs also want to all hold these events on a Saturday during the last half of June. That's where the appointment calendar is so important. It prevents double booking... not good if you ever want to be invited again.
This year I have been fortunate. The invitations have been for non-conflicting dates. Better yet, they are not for a Saturday in the second half of the month. That's a good thing because both of those days had other events scheduled. I say had because one of the events has been canceled because somebody else wasn't keeping a calendar very well.
What kind of PDA did you have? I have two stuck in a drawer that I don't use...one is a Palm and I don't remember what the other is. The Gates Foundation gave them to school administrators. Both worked when I stopped using them. Do you want them? I was going to add them to my box of junk, uhmm valuable treasures, for our Lion's yard sale later this month. Let me know if you could use them and I'll throw them in the mail to you. One even has a keyboard that you can plug it in to.
ReplyDeleteCan Brighton Lions book you for the first Saturday in June 2011?
ReplyDelete#1 - I don't know what to say. Your offer is most generous. I'm really not seeking to replace my Palm. Though I do admit that it was really handy. Selling your PDAs at the Lions Club's yard sale will probably serve a much higher purpose. If you don't have any takers, then let me know.
ReplyDeleteBP - regretfully, Sharon and I are committed to serving breakfast at the Senior Center the next morning... and we still have yet to get passports.
"and we still have yet to get passports."
ReplyDeleteYou've still got 12 months! How long do you want?
Well, the truth is that, if we seem anxious to get them, someone might wonder why we're in such a hurry to leave the country.
ReplyDeleteYes, well, if you say so...
